Grumpy? Don't visit Belmont California! That San Francisco Bay Area city is the first in the nation to ban all forms of grumpiness, sadness, meanness, and unpleasant behavior.
Last night, the Belmont City Council voted 12-0 in favor of a new ordinance mandating that all in the city must "put on a happy face", even if they don't mean it. Police will be empowered to give tickets to residents and visitors that are wearing frowns, speaking negatively, or otherwise behaving rudely or in an anti-social manner. Evidence continues to mount that unhappiness leads to a wide variety of social ills, and it's contagious as well! Belmont hopes that their efforts will radiate positive energy throughout the Bay Area, leading to a much happier and more fulfilled region able to achieve its spiritual goals. Councilman Dick Warden says, "We have a tremendous opportunity here. We need to pass as stringent a law as we can, I would like to make all forms of unhappiness - all forms - illegal. What if every city did this, imagine how many lives would be saved? If we can do one little thing here at this level it will matter." "I'm astounded. I admire their courage and unanimous support," said Dick Pelosi, policy director of the United Nations-affiliated International Mental Health Association, "I feel like the happiness revolution is taking place and I am trying to catch up."
